Reading Week a Huge Success at Southwest!

Thank you to all of the students, families, and staff that helped to make Reading Week a big success! Throughout the week Southwest celebrated the joy of reading with a variety of activities and events. Check out the links below for more information and photos from the week.

 

 

Monday, 2/26

DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) - Throughout the day, announcements were made to DEAR!

 

Tuesday, 2/27

Team Day - In honor of our theme this year, Team Southwest, students wore their favorite team's jersey or colors to show team spirit. Teachers shared "team" related books with their students.

 

Wednesday, 2/28

Mini Olympics - Students participated in the Southwest Mini Olympics during their Workout Wednesday time. Students got to try their hand at several team-building Olympic games such as curling, skeleton, and cross-country skiing.

 

Reading Night was also on Wednesday. Over 40 families participated! Students and their families participated in book-related activities and had a chance to win a fabulous basket filled with reading goodies. Thanks to the Reading Night Committee for putting on such an awesome event.

 

Thursday, 3/1

All school assembly with special guest, SOUTHPAW!!! - The official mascot of the Chicago White Sox, Southpaw, came and shared the importance of reading along with some stories and a message about accepting differences. A special thank you to the Southwest Boosters for supporting this event.

 

Friday, 3/2

Bedtime Story Day - The students wore their pajamas and brought a blanket to help them get comfortable as they watched a special movie. Each classroom watched a movie that was created from a book.
