SW Garden Harvest Success

The Southwest students have been working hard this spring to tend to the beautiful garden at our school. On April 15th, the 4th and 5th grade students planted a variety of vegetables and flowers with the support of Ms. Nancy, Mrs. Marsan and other volunteers from the University of Illinois Horticulture Program. Over the next few weeks, each class from Kindergarten through 5th grade took turns tending the garden and ensuring it was watered and free of weeds and bugs. The combination of love, caring and warm weather resulted in a bountiful garden this year! On June 8th, the 4th and 5th grade students helped to harvest the garden. That same day, all Southwest students were given a sampling of what was grown in the garden to take home and share with their families. The Southwest Garden Club also created a recipe book that was sent home with information and ideas of how to prepare delicious meals using the harvested vegetables. Thank you to all of the students, staff and volunteers who helped make our garden possible this year - we all learned so much and enjoyed the healthy food!
